Conclusion
There are, as I have stated, pros and cons to having private
information on the Internet. The examples for both sides of the issue are
small in comparision to the vast amount of ways your personal data can be
used, abused, beneficial, or harmful. After all is said and done, what is
the answer to the issue of Internet and privacy?
Basically, there is no complete answer. The pros are beneficial,
and the cons are dangerous. The resolution of this issue cannot be made
in a simple project or a lengthy debate. Legislation may have to play
more of role down the line, but who knows how influential any Internet
laws are going to be. As long as this private information is out there,
it can be used to any logon's liking, whether good or bad.
The answer is therefore: to wait and see. Look at it from a
utilitarian's point of view if you want--does the net happiness outweigh
the net unhappiness (35). If this private information is used for
beneficial reasons more than negative ones, than the issue of privacy is
no longer relevant. If this private information is used manipulatively
instead of positively, than our privacy must be more strictly regulated.
The main idea is that privacy is important to people all over the world;
we must keep a watchful eye over how it is to be used.
