Goals and objectives

Theory and Literature of Rhetoric is an overview of the essential concepts of classical and contemporary rhetoric, examining theorists and theories, thereby providing a common vocabulary for a rhetorical perspective. Theory and Literature of Rhetoric seeks to develop your appreciation for the artistic and purposive use of symbols as they shape our lives so you can apply rhetorical principles to communication. Students at Bradley will learn to make a homepage and to use that page as a tool for linking rhetorical concepts with on-line resources.

Modes of participation

If you are a Bradley Communication major/speech concentration (or speech teaching, or a speech minor) student, you must take the face-to-face, in-person course (COM 303), or COM 304: Communication Analysis, to fulfill the degree requirement. If you are in the face-to-face course, you will make extensive use of the resources in these on-line files. You may take the on-line course as an elective (assuming that you meet the degree requirement by taking COM 304).

Degree-seeking students at Bradley can register for the on-line course, as elective credit, at any time. However, they must have the written permission of advisor and chair to count the course toward major or minor requirements. On-line students register for COM 491-75 and will receive 2 credits for course completion.

If you are not a Bradley student but wish to take the on-line course, you may register for COM 491-75 and will receive 2 credits for course completion.

All students registering for 491-75 (the on-line version) will receive credit for "Theory and Literature of Rhetoric, on-line." The tuition for the course is $359.00 (US) per credit hour. The cost of the text and mailing, if necessary, are additional. All registrations, enrollments, and payments, are made through the Division of Continuting Education (309-677-2523) after permission to register is obtained from Dr. Lamoureux. SPECIAL NOTE FOR BRADLEY STUDENTS: YOU MUST PAY FOR THE ON-LINE VERSION REGARDLESS OF YOUR OTHER CREDITS/HOURS/PAYMENT SITUATIONS. YOU CANNOT TAKE THE COURSE "FREE" AS PART OF YOUR REGULAR 16 HOUR LOAD.

All students will complete the reading assignments and will submit written summaries of that reading. All students will complete 6 " Enriched Rhetorical Learning Packages." Bradley students will post those packages on their homepages (pages we will learn to make over the course of the term) and for use in the course pages; non-Bradley participants may submit the packages via electronic mail or post them to their homepage (if they have one). All students will have access to our on-line discussion group which can also be used for construction of Enriched Rhetorical Learning Packages. All students will be able to contribute to a moderated on-line discussion group. Click here to go to the discussion group:

All students will have electronic access to the instructor, including video teleconferencing for those with the technology on their computer.

TO REGISTER FOR THE ONLINE VERSION, STUDENTS MUST MEET THE PREREQUISITES FOR COM 303 (JUNIOR --OR SOPH BY PERMISSION-- AND COMPLETION OF THE BASIC SPEECH COURSE); STUDENTS MUST CONTACT DR. LAMOUREUX ; ONLINE STUDENTS WILL REGISTER THROUGH BRADLEY'S OFFICE OF CONTINUING EDUCATION (NOT VIA THE PHONE REGISTRATION SYSTEM).
