"Whenever Man"

by Derek Campbell

Overview: In the year 2108, scientists unlocked the mysteries of time
travel. On the trial run, however, due to a couple of freak accidents and
unforeseen eventualities, the unfortunate test subject of the time travel
experiment became physically trapped in the time stream...or so it was
assumed. None of the scientists considered the possibility of human
survival in the timestream, and the time travel experiment was considered
a failure...until the subject returned. Having absorbed energies from the
timestream, the test subject was able to leap in and out of time, thereby
being able to control everyone with the threat of leaping back in time
and preventing a person's parents from meeting.

Government: A global monarchy is established with the Time Traveler in
control. An elite team of time police is formed to prevent any further
tamperings with the time stream. The Time Traveler, showing little
compassion for individuals and concerned only with humanity as a whole,
is apathetic toward local governmental control. In time, the Time
Traveler becomes so bored with politics as a whole that the time police,
in effect, run the daily lives of the Earth's citizenry.

International situation: After the Time Traveler returned, the
international situation became moot as all nations of the world were
swiftly conquered. As political borders become inconsequential, though,
ethnic groups tend to cluster together and ignore everyone else.

Religion: Religion is back, due mainly to the fact that many people
believed the Time Traveler was a scourge sent to the Earth from the
heavens as a way of punishing people for attempting to control the laws
of the universe. Each ethnic group has their own particular brand of
revitalized religion, but all are mostly based around the idea of the
Time Traveler being a punishment.

Technology: Time travel is the most significant technological advance,
but its secret is closely guarded to prevent anyone else from abusing its
power. There have been significant advances in weaponry, computers, and
medicine, though most people aren't excited enough about living in this
world that they take very good care of themselves, so the average
lifespan isn't that much greater than it is now.
